Why does `flox install` ask me to sign in?

The catalog authentication change, explained.

You've hit our new catalog authentication requirement. To install or curate a package from the Flox Catalog, you now need a free FloxHub account. This applies to flox install, flox upgrade, and flox edit when adding packages.

What's not affected

Using existing environments still works without signing in. flox activate, flox search, and flox show stay open. The Flox CLI itself remains free.

Why we made this change

The Flox Catalog is a shared resource we curate and maintain for the community. Requiring an account for catalog operations lets us keep the catalog healthy, prevent abuse, and give you a home for the environments you build with those packages.

How to sign in

Run flox auth login from your terminal. It'll open a browser to hub.flox.dev where you can create a free account with Google or email. Takes about 30 seconds. Once signed in, retry your command.
